Educators and Tertiary education organisations have the professional responsibility to:
- Educate people to help them lead a meaningful life;
- Help create a just and caring society;
- Be guides, role models, challengers and learners.
Learning is:
- An active process that can only be undertaken by the person who learns: Learning is always personal.
- Hard work: Learning costs energy and time and can be frustrating, as new knowledge challenges our very being.
- A creative process that occurs through interacting with the world: Relationships and connections are essential in influencing learning.
Through my work I aim to:
- Help create tertiary education programmes and courses that:
- assist people in leading meaningful lives;
- embrace diversity and nurture sustainability;
- allow students to take ownership of their learning;
- Strengthen curriculum development as an educational endeavour, with particular attention to answering the question: What and whose knowledge is most important to be learned?;
- Help educational organisations develop as educational knowledge centres for their communities;
- Help enrich the potential of Aotearoa/New Zealand society by bringing alternative approaches and perspectives into educational practice and thought.
